Two
pictures of the 1st Company in action in Duekoue in January. In the upper
picture, taken at a checkpoint named "Lumio" shows Legionnaries,
supported by a VBL light armoured car its 7.62mm ANF-1 machine gun,
responding to rebel fire up the road. The VBL belonged to units of the
regular French Army. The lower picture shows an 81mm mortar team in action,
sending off high-explosive mortar shells in the direction of the rebel forces
dispersed a few hundred metres up from the checkpoint of "Calvi". It
was these mortars and the 20mm cannon equipped Gazelle helicopters that caused
the greatest number of casualties amongst the rebels.
