A scene not uncomon in many of the rebel occupied areas of the Ivory Coast, particularly in the regions close to the Liberian border. The village was found by French troops pillaged and razed to the ground, the local habitants, unarmed and unable to defend themselves against “modern” firearms being killed and their primitive houses looted and burnt by violent rebel groups. The corpses, severely mutilated from hand or rocket-propelled grenade explosions, were left to rot in the African sun. The ferocity and violence of the rebel groups against the civilian population was heartwrenching, the motives for massacres like these not being religion, race or politics, but simple greed and trigger-happy cold-bloodedness.
